From time to time we get asked our
opinion about different speed reading courses, and we thought we would
take this page to go over the various methods of learning to speed
read. Books- It seems like
speed reading books are everywhere. There are good ones, and
some that I think are a bit overhyped, but they all pretty much teach
the same thing. Books are great for giving you an overview of
how speed reading works, and they will teach you finger pacing skills,
but do little to expand your field of vision or really train your
eyes. Yes, you can learn to speed read from a book, but it takes
a while, and a lot of disciplined practice.
Audio programs contain pretty much the
same information that books have, but in an audio form. Again,
some of them are okay, some are overhyped. A properly produced
audio speed reading course can be nice, but I think it's a bit
cumbersome, and time-consuming.
Hypnosis- Hypnosis can work for a
lot of different things, but I'm not sure how well it works for speed
reading. It's great if you want to quit smoking or loose weight,
but I'm not sure how well it will train your eyes to move better or
expand your field of vision.
The hypnosis tapes that are available typically recommend listening to
them for an hour a day for 21 days. I tried one, but just didn't
have the time to take a nap for an hour every day for 3 weeks.
Classes are nice because there is usually
an experienced person that will help guide you through the various
speed reading techniques. They're not bad, but you have to have
access to them, and they can be costly and time-consuming.
Software- This was what worked for me.
A good piece of speed reading software can make all the difference in
the world. It's nice because it does a lot of the work for you.
You don't have to sit there with a stop-watch to calculate your
reading speed, you don't have to read page after page of information
in order to glean a few tips and techniques. You sit back and
let the software guide you through the learning process. Spend
15 minutes with it when you get a chance, and you'll double your
reading speed in no time
In the process of learning to speed read I tried
just about everything. Speed Your Read just plain worked for me.
